In today’s stressful world, we need to find ways to be able to escape from the everyday pressures of not only the workplace but also; day to day living. When we let the pressure build from outside sources, then our health suffers as we need to let off steam but tend to bottle it all up and within. This results in all manner of problems from headaches to migraines to high blood pressure to lowering of our immune system so that we end up catching colds and flu’s and whatever virus is on the go. Meditation is widely becoming recognized as a tool to relieve stress and to be able to help you cope with any obstacle or problem including improving health issues. Many corporations are bringing in experts to teach their staff how to meditate as they have seen the benefits of as little as 4 weeks of using a focused meditative state.
These include higher concentration levels, more confidence in self, less time off sick and improved memory. Meditation is quite a simple art and anyone can do it. You just need to train your mind to focus and concentrate. Meditation can be done in any position where you feel most comfortable. I would recommend a comfortable chair without any distractions. Make sure that you unplug the phone and you avoid anything that could alarm you and make you jump. It is a good idea to play some relaxing music as you close your eyes and get comfortable, use a blanket or have something to cover yourself incase you get cold.
Start by taking a few deep breaths, inhaling and exhaling slowly and just place your attention on your breathing at this time. You can then place your attention on different parts of your body, starting at your toes, telling each part to relax and let go. Soon you will feel a lot calmer and ready to begin to visualize different scenes in your mind.
Everyone can learn visualization skills, it just takes time and practice but the benefits are worth it. With a positive state of mind and regular meditation, we can heal ourselves from within bringing mental, physical and emotional relief. By using your visualization skills, you are actually giving your mind and brain a chance to recharge itself.
You are basically stopping yourself from thinking about all of your problems and stresses and what you have to do or any thing that seems to be negatively on your mind at present. This means that you free your mind and it is like a wonderful break literally for your body and mind.
By visualizing that you are lying on a lovely beach listening to the sounds of the sea and reading a good book, actually sends signals to your brain of feeling happy and content which in turn releases endorphins which has a calming effect on the nervous system.
You can choose whatever scene makes you happy, for some people that would be a walk in the country rather than lying on the beach. The essence is that your mind at some level believes that you are there. Trying this is a very safe and beneficial as well as enjoyable exercise and building the meditation up over a few weeks will soon help you to notice the difference in your life.
So if you feel you are under stress especially during the Christmas period, or in need of a break but cannot find the time to get away, then why not give yourself a chance to experience what is now becoming the medicine of the future. My advice to you is to always focus on what you want, not what you don’t want and watch how you change the world around you.
